CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT – Every year prior to the start of the PIAA season, every coach (paid and volunteer) employed by the School District must take the NFHS Concussion course. The course is free and is offered online at http://nfhslearn.com/electiveDetail.aspx?courseID=15000. The course takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and has a 5-question quiz at the end. Coaches who successfully pass the course are given a certificate to return to the School District. Again, this is an annual requirement for all coaches.
SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST – In addition to the concussion course, all coaches are required to take an annual Sudden Cardiac Arrest course. The course structure and format is similar to the Concussion course which is also mandated by state law. The website for the sudden cardiac arrest course is http://www.sportsafetyinternational.org/cardiacwise-pats/. The course takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and you will receive a certificate upon completion which must be turned into the School District prior to the start of your season.
Every coach employed by the School District (paid and volunteer) MUST complete both courses prior to the season. Coaches are not allowed to work with student-athletes until these requirements are satisfied. For ease of tracking and to ensure that all coaches are ready to go for the first day of the season, I would like all coaches to have both these courses taken, with certificates turned in, no later than August 1 of each year. Coaches may not start a season without these requirements being fulfilled.
In addition to the two annual courses which are required, every employee of the school district must take a CHILD ABUSE RECOGNITION course. This is a 3 – 4 hour online course which is mandated by the state of Pennsylvania. Once the course is complete, employees must read the Schuylkill Valley School District Child Abuse Recognition policy and sign the acknowledgement form. If you need to take this course, please contact Human Resources to set up a registration for you.
